Despite Valentino and all the other exposure videos on YouTube, I find it weird when I do "card through window" or some other exposed trick and fool the pants of a group! Most people don't sit around Googling magic trick methods, thank heavens! When Valentino first came out in his mask, magicians bemoaned the end of magic! But it never came! And no matter what's exposed, if the presentation is changed properly, no one even knows it's the same trick they saw revealed on YouTube. And while many magicians bitch about Criss Angel and his methods, you have to admit that many awards, millions of dollars, a hit Vegas stage show and world fame is hard to argue with! Besides, the people who are still whining about camera tricks never speak of his stage show which he does twice a day and is booked for a 10 year run. None of them are likely to ever see that much stage time in their entire careers. And magic had fallen into a rut prior to Angel's arrival on the tube. Magic became mainstream and popular again then! People wanted to hire us for their functions. The only problem was they wanted to see Criss Angel stuff, not the hippity hop bunnies and chop cups that so many lugged around show to show. But I digress. In closing, I must agree that internet exposure sucks ass big time, but if we as performers wish to combat it, we must take our cue from something Valentino himself once remarked when asked why he exposed magic. He stated that he exposed old magic tricks, some of which are over 100 years old, in order to make magicians come up with new and better illusions. (Of course once they did, he started to expose those tricks too, but that's beside the point) We must strive for new and better illusions! We cannot be satisfied to fall back on tired old effects! We must stay 2 steps ahead of the exposure enemy! Magic is undergoing a revolution of change, and we have to get off our collective duffs and meet it head on!
