Kick-Ass: A Worthy Title
Bloody, senseless violence with a comedic edge? Something about that screams poetry on screen.
Being the comic quasi-nerd I am, the second I found out another Mark Millar masterpiece was coming to the big screen – I shouted for joy. Wanted was decent, but this movie was going to stay true to the original graphic novel.
The better part? It almost did.
The best part? The parts they changed worked for the better.
Not everyone will like this movie. If you don’t like comics, superheroes or anything nerdy, there won’t be enough compelling points about this movie to draw you in. Essentially, if you didn’t like/had no desire for the Watchmen movie, you can stay away from this one as well. In no way is my intention to say these two movies are similar – they’re not. I’m just using Watchmen as a basis for comparison. In summary: take the violence of Watchmen, add some comedic elements without making it goofy and you get Kick-Ass.
The story revolves around the character of Dave, a comic book nerd who fantasizes about becoming a superhero. Dave doesn’t transition into some epic, legendary hero. He starts a nerd, he stays a nerd. He goes out into the streets attempting to fight crime, sucks at it and keeps getting his ass kicked… giving the story a certain believability factor. However, the real story is with the characters of Big Daddy and Hit Girl. Simply put, Dave has no skillz and is a total noob while Big Daddy and Hit Girl are Gosu/1337. Nicolas Cage plays the role of Big Daddy and he does a bang up job – no complaints.
The movie itself was a satisfying experience. At no point did I ever feel the movie dragged and I left with a huge smile on my face. I was expecting something good from this movie and it delivered on all fronts. It’s not very often that I leave a movie completely satisfied. However, with all the praise, I do feel this movie is a one time only deal. I don’t feel it has enough to keep people coming back for more, which could be looked at as a disappointment. To a certain extent, it is.
Overall, the acting was great, the action was superb and the story brought it all together. Go see it this weekend if you have any inkling of interest.
Nice movie…
